Mexico

One of the things that got me initially considering a blog was my recent trip with my husband and a missions team from church to Mexico. I had thought it would have been nice to journal my trip as I went. As it is, I am in the process of transfering much of what was in my written journal to my Dad's message board for friends and family to read there. So I pretty much don't feel like doing it twice. Anyway, if you are interested in learning about Casa Hogar del Nino de Acapulco, a Presbyterian orphanage in Acapulco, or about our (my husband and I) excursion into the mountains of Oaxaca where he grew up as a missionary kid in San Juan Mixtepec, you can read my ramblings here.
Otherwise, I'm sure I'll eventually get around to at least giving a summary of each. It was frustrating to me to find very little information on either on the web before I went, and my hope is that by documenting my time there, it may help someone else plan more effectively.
Tata for now.

Engrish

I was reading Scott's blog last night and particularly enjoyed reading a post where he had copied an email he received which was apparently very poorly translated. I love language. And I especially love it when myself or others mix it up in a way that turns out really funny. It has to be one of the greatest side effects of having kids that you get to listen to them try to learn language. Like when Joseph came running in to me yesterday to tell me that Noah was dumping all the "salt cleaner" on the floor. It was laundry detergent. Looks like salt, I suppose.
I am blessed to have a wonderful friend, Mako, who is from Japan, and who shares my love of language. I have an incredible amount of respect for Mako. Japanese is an extremely complicated language. Mako speaks and writes English so well that it is easy to forget she's not a native speaker sometimes. And the thing about learning English when you are Japanese is that you have to learn a whole new alphabet. All that said, as much as I respect Mako, I still get the giggles in choir every time she sings "Tlee of Rife" instead of "Tree of Life." If you fall into that category, you may enjoy a website Mako shared with me: www.engrish.com

My first blog entry

So here it is. My first attempt at blogging. I'm hoping to use this as a way to start learning the ropes of blogging, html, etc., and eventually do a better job at keeping the world at large aware of the comings and goings of the Ibach family. But be forewarned: I have no idea what I'm doing yet. Be patient with my attempts.
