. . .the latest life lesson I've learned from my number 4 kid, Joseph. Joseph will be six tomorrow. I had a conversation with him today which I think reflects a lot about who he is, so I thought I'd share it:
Me, singing: Jingle Snails, Jingle Snails. . ..
Joseph: Mom, it's Jingle Bells, not Snails.
Me: I know, but Snails is sillier
Joseph: But it doesn't make sense. Snails don't jingle.
Me: But wouldn't it be funny if they did. You could just grab 'em and shake 'em, and they would jingle.
Joseph: I don't think that's very nice, Mom. Snails aren't toys. They're real animals. You shouldn't just go around shaking them.
Me: Sorry. My bad.
I guess pouring salt on them is totally out of the question, then? Not that I have done that..lately.
Posted by: Mandy at Diciembre 20, 2006 07:35 PMLet's just remember here that there is a *huge* difference between snails and slugs. One is cute and admirable (for carrying around his house), while the other is ugly and gross (for all the times I've accidentally grabbed one and squished it on my hand while picking something up outside). The distinction is very, very important. :D
Posted by: Scott at Diciembre 20, 2006 08:40 PMCome on, now Scott. A slug is just a homeless snail.
Posted by: gcw at Diciembre 21, 2006 12:07 PMOr perhaps a snail is a well dressed slug.
Posted by: willa at Diciembre 21, 2006 09:52 PMHmm, I never thought of slugs as being homeless. That must explain why they like saucers of beer so much (sorry...I know it's a bad pun).
Posted by: Scott at Diciembre 22, 2006 12:11 AMAh, you are correct. My mistake...it is slugs I have probably not poured any salt on in the recent past. Probably.
Posted by: Mandy at Diciembre 22, 2006 08:08 PMAs Joseph pointed out, gastropods are indeed from the animalia kingdom under the mollusca phylum. Both snails and slugs are gastropods from the greek "gaster" meaning stomach and "poda" meaning feet. Slugs are merely snails with reduced or absent shells. Even without these shells most slugs show the same twisted internals as snails which are a result of the bending growth caused by the case that grows with them. So, Scott, while you may have an emotional affinity for the snail versus the slug, there is very little scientific difference.

Posted by: Scott at Diciembre 26, 2006 10:58 PMInterestingly enough, if you google "homeless snail" and hit "images", you get a *plethora* of pics of slugs.
Posted by: willa at Diciembre 27, 2006 08:58 PMyou know, that is a very good point. snails aren't toys. I think we should make t-shirts with that logo. we could make millions.
great to see you! thanks for taking pictures for my family:) any advice on what camera I should get? assuming price isnt a problem?
"Homeless Snail" could be a good blog name. . .
Posted by: lynnp at Diciembre 28, 2006 08:54 PMgood idea, joanna.
