| What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. | |

This is actually what I've been told most of my life. Up north, they say I sound southern. Down south, they say I sound northern. I just like to keep 'em guessing.

Posted by: Mandy at Noviembre 20, 2006 06:08 PMWell, Mandy, I'd have to agree with you. The thing is, by the very nature of the way this quiz is set up, it doesn't measure "drawl". In other words, it tests our lexicon, what words we use, and our pronounciation in the sense that one says "tomayto" another "tomahto". You are a well enunciated, educated southerner. Which means your lexison and pronounciation are not that exaggerated. What gives you the edge is what I like to refer to as "the twang factor". There is just no way to measure that. It involves voice inflection, syllable emphasis, speech speed, and so on.
Okay, sorry. Can you tell I love language?? It's pretty much my favorite thing, Kip.
Anyway, do not fear, dear sis. Your status as a bona fide drawling Vols fan is safe, as far as I'm concerned.
Posted by: willa at Noviembre 21, 2006 09:42 AMGood thang. Cause I'd be perty upset iffn I's rilly talkin' like a Midlander.
Posted by: Mandy at Noviembre 21, 2006 04:17 PMHa! I just read that comment with my extreme southern drawl (you know, the one I do when somebody asks me to "talk southern), and I made myself laugh out loud.
