Those of you who know Joseph know he is obsessed with Spiderman. He forces Sydney to pretend to be MJ so he can rescue her repeatedly from Stephen, who plays the part of the Green Goblin. I have to convince him to go to church disguised as Peter Parker in order to get him out of his red and blue pajamas without a fight.
So the other day, I was watching a movie with the kids, and Joseph made a comment about getting his toy shark off the mantle. It didn’t sink in. At least not for the 30 seconds it took before I turned my gaze toward the mantle just in time to see Joseph finish scaling the fireplace and seat himself on the mantle where his shark was located. I mean, he literally went straight up the front of the fireplace in no time at all. Just like Spiderman. Here’s a shot of Noah trying to imitate, with no luck.
We were at a party the other week where a 2 year old girl (who is sized like a 3 year old) started climbing a bookcase to get at some candy. The other kids wisely backed away just in time to see the girl and the bookcase come crashing down. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.
Kids will do the most unexpected and fearless things. I suppose with the bookcase the parents could have installed L brackets at the top to secure it to the wall. But that doesn't stop the climbing instinct, it just makes it a little safer. That mantle looks fun to me and I'm sure I would have done the same thing, too. I can imagine myself crouching in the TV cubby in the dark and pouncing on an unsuspecting passerby.
Posted by: Scott at Febrero 24, 2005 02:10 PMYes, all of the bookcases (and dressers) in our house are securely attached to the walls with L brackets for exactly that reason. Noah frequently climbs our 8' bookcase to get whatever we've hidden from him up there. Just a big ladder to him.
Posted by: willa at Febrero 24, 2005 03:26 PMThey're just like thier mother! When Willa was two she would hold on to the coat hooks hung on the wall outside her Sunday School room and climb the walls while I was getting her sisters from their class.
