We haven’t sent out photos of our kids in a while. It’s partly because of my lack of organization in getting the photos taken, printed, addressed, stamped and mailed. I’m easily distracted these days and I rarely make it through that whole process. It’s also partly because of the cost. Add up the cost of photo processing and postage, and it’s not exactly cheap. But the main reason is that it is nearly impossible to get a decent photo of five kids simultaneously, especially when they are all under the age of 10. Here’s an example of what I mean, from this past Sunday’s attempt:
Sam insisted, “Mom, I am smiling!!”
We did get a couple of decent shots, but it always seems that there will be that one perfect shot of everybody, except one kid.
We had the same trouble this year with two, so I can only imagine what it was like with five. We settled on a shot where both of our kids have serious looks on their faces...kind of like an old timey photo. I made it B&W to enhance that aspect.
A couple years ago we were determined to have Pam, Aidan and myself on our Christmas card. There was not one photo where all three of us looked decent. So I found two that had similar body positions and cut a head off one photo and blended it into the other. It came off looking real. I'll have to post it on my family blog and see if anyone can guess whose head is photoshopped.

I'm the oldest of 5. There aren't many pics of all us from the early days. And now that we're all grown and can conceivably be convinced to all smile at the same time, we live all over the world. :)
I think you ought to use the bottom one. I just love it! It just screams personality, and i don't even know your kids. You look like a fun family.
That one perfect shot of everybody except one kid? Would that be the last photo? Sydney just wouldn't cooperate, huh? She does so hate to get in front of a camera. . .
Posted by: lynnp at Diciembre 21, 2004 12:27 PMYes, Lynn, the last one, and several others. And, yes, Syd does love to be in front of the camera. What she doesn't love is sharing the spotlight with her brothers, and being told how to smile. She kept insisting on putting her hands on her hips and standing in such a way that the skirt, which was slightly too big, would fall and her shirt raise up so that I have quite a few shots of her belly and panties. Sam was the uncooperative one for the first several shots. Noah is constantly paying more attention to his "handy dandy notebook" than to the camera, so I have few of his face and many of the top or side of his head. I'm going to upload the other pics to the message board album later; when I do I'll try to provide a link here as well. Thanks, Jeanette. They are fun. . .most of the time. ;)
Posted by: willa at Diciembre 21, 2004 02:53 PMIt's really gonna be a challenge to get all 12 kids when we get together for the grandkids Christmas photo!
